FOSDEM 2012
Last weekend many Mozillians attended FOSDEM in a freezing cold Brussels. A huge thank you to Benoit Leseul and team for organizing our efforts there. Rob Hawkes talked about open Web apps and open Web games, whilst Tristan Nitot announced six grants to international non-profits who will strengthen the Web, free and open source software and user sovereignty.

Mozilla Antarctica
The Mozilla Antarctica Community Site recently launched which will provide news, interviews and other stuff from the coolest Mozilla community. Not only do we love the penguins but Antarctica is the only continent to have a majority Firefox market share. Must be all the intelligent scientists using it!

Become a WebFWD Affiliate
Do you want to spread some open source love? You do? Great! Because you can now become a WebFWD affiliate and increase awareness of Mozilla’s open innovation program. Signing up is super simple and in a few clicks you can display your love of WebFWD.

Bedrock ready to go!
The Web Development team have finished the new Bedrock platform which will power the mozilla.org website. Bedrock is a complete rewrite of the site, clearing up years of cruft and implementing cool new features.

Interview with Nikhil Suresh
Havi Hoffman interviews Nikhil Suresh about Bouncy and the Apple, his non-violent 2-person shooter game which won him the November MDN Developer Derby. She learns a little bit more about Nikhil and what inspires him.

Open Election 2012
Mozilla partners with public media to launch Open Election 2012. The event will showcase how open web technologies and citizen participation can make election coverage more accessible to diverse audiences, and provide new ways to engage with the news. Tuesday’s State of the Union Address from U.S. President Barack Obama will include crowd sourced captions and subtitles provided by everyday citizens around the world.

Tomorrow’s Webmakers

Our Japanese community along with Mozilla staff and friends organised a wonderful hackjam event for young Web makers in Tokyo. The whole day was run as a series of Hive “Popups” which included activities like remixing the web with Hackasaurus and prototyping Web interfaces on paper.

Community Photo Collection

The Creative team needs your help collecting photos that capture the personality of our global community for an upcoming design project inspired by the new orange design of the Firefox download page. If you have any pictures that you’d like to submit, please tag them with mwcboothdesign by Thursday.

SOPA/PIPA Postponed
Thank you to everyone who spoke out against the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act and the PROTECT IP Act. It’s your actions that have postponed these bills. We have a breakdown of the statistics for the campaign if you would like to find out more.

Dev Derby for January
This month’s competition is about orientation, and we are looking forward to some really interesting ideas and demos from you people! So, what are you waiting for? Submit your demo now!

Thunderbird testday

Protect the Internet

Mozilla is joining a virtual strike against Internet censorship – along with others like Wikipedia and Google – to raise awareness of U.S. Congress legislation that could fundamentally alter the Internet. This harmful legislation, called the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), will be voted on as early as January 24th in the U.S. Senate. Mozilla Firefox Challenge

Mozilla is pleased to announce that the Mozilla Firefox Challenge has raised more than $680,000 for social and humanitarian causes around the world.  We would like to extend our congratulations and sincere gratitude to all participating individuals and organizations that made the Mozilla Firefox Challenge a major success. Thank you all for helping us do a world of good.

Identity in the Cloud

Firefox ESR

We are pleased to announce the Extended Support Release (ESR) of Firefox for use by companies, public institutions, universities and other organizations that centrally manage their Firefox deployments.

If you’re interested in the ESR or discussions around deploying Firefox in a managed environment, we’d encourage you to join the Mozilla Enterprise Working Group.

Universal Tab

We’re excited to roll out the next phase of the universal tab as part of the One Mozilla project. Right now it’s organized into four major areas, but it will surely evolve based on testing, usage trends and of course your input. If you have suggestions, please let us know in the comments section.

MPL Version 2.0
We’re starting off 2012 by releasing MPL 2.0, the updated version of the Mozilla Public License that is shorter, better, and more compatible with other Free Software and Open Source Licenses. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the process.

Badges Competition

Mozilla is seeking designers and developers to participate in the $2 million “Badges for Learning” competition. Participants will have the chance to design digital badges for more than 60 different leading organizations including NASA, Intel and Disney-Pixar, all aimed at providing recognition for learning that happens on the Web or outside of school. To get involved check out the competition Web site. Deadline for entries is January 17. Good luck.

WebFWD Resolutions
The WebFWD team share their goals for 2012 and some of the ways you can participate in their efforts to keep the Web open, innovative and at the service of users.

Add-ons Compatibility
All add-ons will be made compatible by default in the upcoming Firefox 10 release, so it’s crunch time for testing them in Beta, Aurora, and Nightly. It would be super helpful for everyone to install the Add-on Compatibility Reporter and let us know through the reporter if your add-ons are working properly.

Mozilla Project Meeting
This is the first weekly Mozilla project meeting for January 2012. These videos are great for keeping up with the cool stuff happening all over the project.

We’re excited to announce Firefox Flicks, a campaign giving everyone an opportunity to produce a short film that highlights what makes Mozilla Firefox different. Gaming and the Apps Project

We really are now at a point where amazing games can be created on the Web with nothing but open technologies. Rob Hawkes gives a very nice overview of how the Mozilla Labs Apps project and other technologies at Mozilla relate to Web gaming.

More Hammer, Less Yammer

Dev Derby Winners!

Back in October we had a Dev Derby challenge around responsive design and it was another very close race, congratulations to our winners. In December we have another Dev Derby challenge around using local storage. We can’t wait to see the next round of demos!

New BrowserID Features
Last week we released an important set of new features for BrowserID.These features make BrowserID more useful, faster, and more secure. Feedback is always welcome on the mailing list or on Twitter using the #browserid hashtag.

Popcorn Maker 0.1
We have just released Popcorn Maker as a Web service. Start a new project and let’s make some popcorn! Feel free to clone the source for yourself to see what you can do locally and help us fix bugs.

Hackasaurus in Africa

Mozilla Kenya ran the first-ever Hackasaurus event in Africa last week. The event held in a Nairobi school introduced youth and novice web makers to the basic building blocks of HTML.
