Last year, Mozilla participated in the first ever Add-on-Con conference for add-on developers and enthusiasts, and it was a huge success. When we were told there would be another Add-on-Con this year, we were excited to get involved again.

This year, Add-on-Con will be on December 11 at the same location, the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. A number of Mozilla folks will be in attendance and leading sessions, including:

Taking Flight with Jetpack: Next Gen Add-ons for Firefox – Aza Raskin
Mobile Firefox Add-on Development – Mark Finkle
The Future of the Add-on Ecosystem – Nick Nguyen and Justin Scott

We’ll also be participating in the closing keynote panel, Future of the Browser. Expect more details on these sessions in the near future, as the schedule gets finalized.

Registration is now open, so if you’re interested in browser add-ons, whether from the technical or business side, it’s a great place to learn about what’s coming, what’s already being done, and networking with browser vendors and other add-on developers.

October Add-ons Meetup Recap

Tuesday night was our first Bay Area Add-ons Meetup since starting the group, and we had a great turn out (around 40 people) with lots of interest from both existing add-on developers and folks interested in add-ons. Based on feedback from our meetups across the country over the last few months, we decided to try out an informal style of a panel of Nick Nguyen and myself talking about what’s currently happening with add-ons and AMO, followed by Q&A on any topic.

Before and after, there was plenty of time for socialization with the attendees and the feedback so far has been that the panel and Q&A was very informative, and we enjoyed our opportunities to talk with add-on developers one-on-one and listen to their concerns. We’re hoping to start having these meetups every other month, so make sure to join our group to be the first to know about the next one.

Bay Area Add-ons Meetup Group

Our last San Francisco Bay Area meetup in May was very successful, with great turnout and positive feedback afterwards. Since then, we’ve had a number of meetups across the United States and learned a lot about what developers are interested in talking about.

Based on that, we thought a recurring meetup group here in the Bay Area where add-on developers and enthusiasts can talk about the issues they face and get answers to their questions would be extremely helpful. We’ve started up the Bay Area Add-ons Meetup Group and will have regular gatherings.

The first of these is coming up on October 13 at Mozilla’s new office in Mountain View. Rather than the previous meetup style of presentations, these meetups will be very informal, with lots of time for networking, Q & A, and discussions. We may have one very short presentation at the beginning to kick things off, but after that the attendees will set the agenda for what happens.

If you’re interested in coming, please RSVP at meetup.com. If you’re in the Bay Area and are interested in add-ons but can’t make this one, you can join the group to be notified when we plan the next one. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone in less than two weeks!

Add-ons Meet-up Wrap-up

Thanks to everyone who attended our Add-ons Meet-up on Tuesday. We estimate about 50-60 people came, and Alex Sirota has posted some great photos he took.

The night started off with pizza and a presentation by Nick Nguyen on the state and roadmap of AMO. Aza Raskin of Mozilla Labs then gave a presentation and demo of Jetpack, followed by presentations by Justin Scott on Collections/Bandwagon and developer.AMO. Wil Clouser talked about our plans for an add-on parsing tool, followed by a Chromebug demo by John J. Barton and a presentation on games in Firefox by Justin Hall.

We recorded all of the sessions and will be posting them on this blog in the near future. Finding a way to split up a large ogg video is more challenging than expected — helpful tips welcome!

If you attended and haven’t already given us feedback, we’d really appreciate a response to our quick survey so we can make the next even better. Stay tuned to this blog for updates on when that will occur.

Schedule for Add-ons Meet-up Available

We’ve posted the schedule for our upcoming Add-ons Meet-up on the event wiki page. It’s a jam-packed night of add-ons, including:

presentations from the AMO team on our roadmap and upcoming projects
Mozilla Labs will demonstrate a new prototype
add-on developers from the community will give talks and demos on their creations

Firefox Mobile Add-ons Challenge

Mozdev and Mozilla Europe are teaming up to sponsor a contest for mobile add-ons. The following post is from the Mozdev blog.

Here at Mozdev, we want to see more add-ons for Firefox Mobile (aka Fennec), so we are teaming up with Mozilla Europe to make a challenge. The task is straightforward. You need only at this time to propose porting your existing add-on to Fennec, or write a new one, with a commitment to finishing it (or at least having a solid proof-of-concept) in time for the Mozilla Maemo Danish Weekend on 30-31 May.

REQUIREMENTS
(We are on a tight schedule and have logistics constraints, so apologise for the deadline and geographical restrictions)

Write a short proposal stating what your add-on name and current install location, why you think it would be useful to mobile browser users, and how you plan on going about implementing it. Send it to brian@mozdev.org by Friday 15 May, at 12:00 CET.
This challenge is only open to developers living in Europe.
The challenge open to current Mozdev project owners, and other developers who host their projects elsewhere.

PRIZE

10 developers will be chosen, and Mozilla Europe will sponsor your travel and hotel expenses to attend the Mozilla Maemo Danish Weekend.
Entries will be judged by Mozdev representatives.

Come to our Add-ons Meetup

On May 26 at 7pm we’re going to host the inaugural Add-ons meetup here at Mozilla. We’ll serve pizza and refreshments and give you a little presentation on what we’ve done so far in add-ons as well as what we plan on doing in the future. We’d love to hear your feedback!

For now we’ll plan on having this at Mozilla HQ- we’ll post any changes to the blog as well as to RSVP’d guests:

Indonesia Mozilla add-ons presentation – April 24
