We are pleased to announce that the proposal for an Extended Support Release (ESR) of Firefox is now a plan of action. The ESR version of Firefox is for use by enterprises, public institutions, universities and other organizations that centrally manage their Firefox deployments. Releases of the ESR will occur once a year, providing these organizations with a version of Firefox that receives security updates but does not make changes to the Web or Firefox Add-ons platform. We have worked with many organizations to ensure that the ESR balances their need for the latest security updates with the desire to have a lighter application certification burden.

Online life is evolving faster than ever and it’s imperative that Mozilla delivers improvements to the Web and to Firefox more quickly to reflect this. Providing updates to Firefox more frequently allows us to secure users against emerging threats and provide the platform for innovation that today’s rich and compelling Web experiences demand. However, this created challenges for organizations that have to deliver lots of mission-critical applications through Firefox, so we worked closely with the Mozilla Enterprise User Working Group to develop the Mozilla Firefox ESR plan.

Mozilla is committed to providing the best Web experience for people everywhere, and our goal for the Firefox ESR is to make it simpler for companies, public institutions, organizations, and institutions that manage their desktops to deploy Firefox in those environments. Over the last few months we received great feedback on the initial proposal from the Mozilla community and strongly believe that the ESR meets that goal.

Implementation specifics will be posted within a week to the mozilla.dev.planning newsgroup and the EWG mailing list. If you’re interested in the ESR or discussions around deploying Firefox in a managed environment, we’d encourage you to join the Mozilla Enterprise Working Group and participate in its discussions and monthly conference calls. To join this group, please see the Enterprise wiki page for additional information.

“We urge Congress to think hard before changing the regulation that underpins the Internet. Let’s not deny the next generation of entrepreneurs and founders the same opportunities that we all had.”

That’s the conclusion of a letter that went to the Hill today signed by seventeen Internet company founders and leaders, including Sergey Brin, Reid Hoffman, Arianna Huffington, Brewster Kahle, Jerry Yang and Mozilla’s own Mitchell Baker. The letter asks that members of Congress recognize the unintended consequences of legislation aimed at combating online piracy.

The controversial bills in question are the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT-IP in the House and Senate, respectively. Mozilla has been working closely with many leading organizations and companies to communicate our concerns with the bills to policy makers in Washington. (See our previous post for more information.)

Just this week, we sent our CEO Gary Kovacs to the White House to discuss alternative approaches to combating online piracy and addressing the specific problem of “rogue sites.” We also signed onto two other letters to the Hill supporting consideration of the Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act, which was introduced last week as a viable alternative to tackling overseas copyright infringement.

Finally, a big “thank you” to all our users and community members! When we asked you to get involved in this issue a few weeks ago, we were blown away by the response. We overheard a Hill staffer at the initial House hearing on SOPA say “the Internet is on fire today.” That was hundreds of thousands of you contacting your representatives with your concerns over the impact of SOPA and PIPA to the Net.

Keep the pressure on. Let your members of Congress know you’re still concerned!A new organization called Engine Advocacy is running a campaign for you to “Add Your Voice and Protect Internet Innovation.”

We’re excited to announce that, in parallel to our own annual end-of-year fundraising campaign, we’re sponsoring the Mozilla Firefox Challenge on CrowdRise to raise awareness and money for social and humanitarian causes.

Mozilla builds products, like Firefox, that put users in control of their online experience and shape the future of the Web — not for profit, but for good. As part of our commitment to making a difference, this holiday season we’re hoping to get everyone in on the spirit of doing good. So, just like we do with Firefox, let’s turn individual action into global impact together.

We brought together 12 cause-minded celebrities, and started each team with a $5,000 donation.

The initial celebrity and cause teams include:

Paul Rudd, The Rolling Dog Farm

Will Ferrell, Cancer for College

David Blaine, Charity: Water

Barbra Streisand, Cedars-Sinai Women’s Heart Center

Jason Bateman, City Year

Christy Turlington Burns, Every Mother Counts

Sophia Bush, F Cancer

Seth Rogen, The Alzheimer’s Association

Sean Penn, The J/P Haitian Relief Organization

Edward Norton, The Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust

Jonah Hill, Nothing But Nets

Zooey Deschanel, The Innocence Project

Starting today, anyone can take part in the Mozilla Firefox Challenge by donating to a celebrity’s cause or fundraising for their own cause.

Mozilla will donate $25,000 to the cause that raises the most money between now and Jan 11, 2012. Each celebrity team is giving away great prizes too. You could win a poster from the film Milk, signed by Sean Penn, an iChat with Seth Rogen, a visit to the Arrested Development set with Jason Bateman, an outgoing voicemail greeting recorded by Paul Rudd and more.

Join us and let’s show the world how much good we can do!

Rudd’s cause is the Rolling Dog Farm, which was his father’s pet project, so now he’s throwing them a bone, too.

Rolling Dog Farm rescues and shelters disabled animals. They come to the farm from human societies, animal control shelters and rescue groups across the country. They do not consider themselves handicapped – they want to get on with life and enjoy themselves and that’s what they get to do at the Rolling Dog Farm.

Actor Will Ferrell has delighted audiences in such movies such as Old School, Elf, Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Stranger Than Fiction, Semi-Pro, and The Other Guys. He launched the popular website, “Funny or Die.” Recently, Ferrell starred in the dramatic, Everything Must Go. Ferrell is supporting a cause that hits close to home – Cancer for College. This charity was founded by Ferrell’s good friend, a two-time cancer survivor.

Cancer for College was founded by Craig Pollard, a two-time cancer survivor, to help cancer survivors and amputees realize their dream of going to college. The bills from hospital visits, surgeries, and treatments are expensive, and even when cancer goes into remission, the battle and bills aren’t over. Cancer for College provides hope and inspiration by providing college scholarships.

The New York Times calls David Blaine a modern day Houdini. USA Today calls him the “hottest name in magic right now.” He sets and breaks world records, performs for American presidents, international presidents, actors, even Muhammed Ali, and performed during the Superbowl Half Time Show. Blaine travels across the world to perform magic for charity – and the charity he’s supporting now is Charity: Water.

There are a billion people on the planet who don’t have clean water. That’s one in every eight people. Charity: Water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

Jason Bateman starred on the hit series, Arrested Development. Bateman is also known for his roles in the films we watch over and over – to name a few, Dodgeball, The Break-Up, Juno, Hancock, Up in the Air, Couples Retreat, The Switch, Paul, Horrible Bosses, and The Change-Up.Bateman is fighting for the charity, City Year, because he knows the statistics – every 26 seconds, a student gives up on school in America. City Year members serve as tutors and role models to help students stay on track to graduate.

City Year is an education focused, non-profit organization wholly focused on fighting the national school dropout crisis. City Year is committed to leverage the talent, energy and idealism of its members to serve as tutors and role models in schools to help students stay on track – and get back on track – to graduate.

Christy Turlington Burns is a model. Turlington Burns appears in fashion documentaries, music videos, and graces the covers of hundreds of magazines. She has worked as a guest correspondent on the NBC Today Show. In 2005, Turlington Burns began working with CARE, and, since became their Advocate for maternal health. This work inspired pursuit of a master’s degree in public health and her first documentary, No Woman, No Cry, which tells the stories of at-risk pregnant women worldwide. After the documentary in 2010, Turlington Burns founded her charity, Every Mother Counts, so she could keep the action going.

A woman dies every 90 seconds from complications of pregnancy. 90% of these deaths are preventable. Every Mother Counts is an advocacy and mobilization campaign to increase education and support for maternal and child health. Every Mother Counts is working to build a clinic for mothers in need in Indonesia this holiday season. Why Indonesia? It’s one of the hardest hit countries in terms of maternal death.

This time, Bush is fighting for the charity, F Cancer, because she knows that this is one of the only charities that focuses on the early detection of cancer, which may be the very best chance at a cure.

F Cancer is a movement that activates Generation Y to engage with their parents about early detection of cancer. Over 90% of cancers are curable if caught in stage one – why don’t more people know this? F Cancer is creating a generation of early detection ambassadors who, by learning about what to do to stay healthy, what to watch out for, and what questions to ask, are taking control of their own health and the health of their parents.

We hear Rogen’s voice in Horton Hears a Who!, Kung Fu Panda, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Paul. And, recently we see and love Rogen in his comedy-drama, 50/50. Rogen is supporting the Alzheimer’s Association – a fatal disease, affecting millions of people and it’s on the rise.

The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research. The mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Penn, committed to his work in Haiti, founded his cause – the J/P Haitian Relief Organization.

The J/P Haitian Relief Organization formed shortly after the 2010 earthquake hit in Haiti. Founded by Sean Penn, they began as an emergency response organization. It became clear that Haiti didn’t need a quick fix – Haiti needs long-term support, including fixing homes, helping families, providing education, building job programs, and developing health programs. Working with the Haitian people and their government, JP HRO is committed to helping the hundreds of thousands still displaced by the earthquake.

Starting at midnight, Mozilla will join other leading Internet companies, public interest groups and citizens in opposing The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the US House of Representatives. We’re censoring the Mozilla logo on many of our web sites as part of American Censorship Day and we sent Congressional leaders a joint letter together with AOL, eBay, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Twitter, Yahoo!, and Zynga raising our concerns with the bill.

This marks the first time we’ve come together with these giants of the Internet on any policy issue. The decision to inform legislators and users of our serious reservations with SOPA was a no-brainer and fell into place quickly over just a few days of discussion. We believe The Stop Online Piracy Act threatens our ability as an industry to continue to offer our many important software and web services to the hundreds of millions of users who rely on them, as well as the many employees and developers we support to innovate these technologies.

For Mozilla, we see this as a fight for the future of the Internet. Mozilla’s General Counsel, Harvey Anderson, blogged a few days ago that if the legislation were to pass into law it would likely chill free expression online, expose Internet users and companies to undue liability, be abused by plaintiffs, and still ultimately fail in its goal to thwart piracy.

We encourage you to take action today and tell your Congressional representatives how you feel about SOPA!

Here’s a copy of our letter to Congressional leaders:

Dear Chairman Leahy, Ranking Member Grassley, Chairman Smith and Ranking Member Conyers:

The undersigned Internet and technology companies write to express our concern with legislative measures that have been introduced in the United States Senate and United States House of Representatives, S. 968 (the “PROTECT IP Act”) and H.R. 3261 (the “Stop Online Piracy Act”).

We support the bills’ stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign “rogue” websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting. Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action, and technology mandates that would require monitoring of web sites. We are concerned that these measures pose a serious risk to our industry’s continued track record of innovation and job-creation, as well as to our Nation’s cybersecurity. We cannot support these bills as written and ask that you consider more targeted ways to combat foreign “rogue” websites dedicated to copyright infringement and trademark counterfeiting, while preserving the innovation and dynamism that has made the internet such an important driver of economic growth and job creation.

One issue merits special attention. We are very concerned that the bills as written would seriously undermine the effective mechanism Congress enacted in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to provide a safe harbor for internet companies that act in good faith to remove infringing content from their sites. Since their enactment in 1998, the DMCA’s safe harbor provisions for online service providers have been a cornerstone of the U.S. Internet and technology industry’s growth and success. While we work together to find additional ways to target foreign rogue sites, we should not jeopardize a foundational structure that has worked for content owners and Internet companies alike and provides certainty to innovators with new ideas for how people create, find, discuss, and share information lawfully online.

We are proud to be part of an industry that has been crucial to U.S. economic growth and job creation. A recent McKinsey Global Institute Report found that the Internet accounts for 3.4 percent of GDP in the 13 countries that they studied, and, in the U.S., the Internet’s contribution to GDP is even larger. If Internet consumption and expenditure were a sector, its contribution to GDP would be bigger than energy, agriculture, communication, mining, or utilities. In addition, the Internet industry has increased productivity for small and medium-sized businesses by 10%. We urge you not to risk either this success or the tremendous benefits these new platforms have brought to hundreds of millions of Americans and people around the world.

We stand ready to work with the Congress to develop targeted solutions to addressing the problem of foreign rogue websites.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Mozilla recently re-established the Mozilla Enterprise User Working Group as a place for enterprise developers, IT staff and Firefox developers to discuss the challenges, ideas and best practices for deploying Firefox in the enterprise. We want to share an update after just a few weeks of the Mozilla Enterprise User Working Group being been back in action.

Following initial discussions with the group about the Firefox release cycle and how enterprises can use Firefox with individual testing and release cycles, members of the group incorporated the input into a proposal to share. The proposal for extended support incorporates ideas and feedback to address the pain points of enterprise Firefox users. We would like to gather additional feedback from enterprises in the coming weeks to turn this proposal into a plan.

We look forward to hearing from enterprise users and IT managers from organizations of all sizes. If you have any feedback, questions, or are interested in participating, please email us.

Recently there’s been a lot of discussion about enterprises and rapid releases. Online life is evolving faster than ever and it’s imperative that Mozilla deliver improvements to the Web and to Firefox more quickly to reflect this. This has created challenges for IT departments that have to deliver lots of mission-critical applications through Firefox. Mozilla is fundamentally about people and we care about our users wherever they are. To this end, we are re-establishing a Mozilla Enterprise User Working Group as a place for enterprise developers, IT staff and Firefox developers to discuss the challenges, ideas and best practices for deploying Firefox in the enterprise. It will be a place to ask questions and get information about Mozilla plans.

The group will have conversations on the discussion list and during in person meetings as well as during monthly phone meetings. The monthly meetings will focus on a topic. In the past we’ve discussed topics like add-on management and security. The next meeting we hold will discuss the release cycle and how enterprises can use Firefox in a way that fits into their own testing and release cycles.

Discussions will preserve the privacy of the participants to facilitate open discussion of best practices and issues companies are facing. Summaries of the discussions will be made public so that everyone can benefit from them.

We look forward to hearing from enterprise users and IT managers from organizations of all sizes.
The Mozilla community is excited to celebrate the 6th birthday of Firefox, the Web browser of choice for nearly 400 million people worldwide.

Mozilla was established more than 10 years ago as a non-profit organization with a mission to promote openness, innovation and opportunity on the Web. Six years ago, Mozilla released Firefox 1.0 offering people a better Web experience.

Today, Firefox is available in more than 70 languages and offers an easy way for people to enjoy rich Web experiences. Nearly a quarter of Internet users choose Firefox as their trusted ambassador to the Web. More than 150 million people choose Firefox Add-ons to customize their Web experience.

The success of Firefox is due to the passionate and dedicated Mozilla community, comprised of tens of thousands of developers, localizers, testers, ambassadors and campus reps.

This year, to celebrate Firefox and the Mozilla community’s work promoting innovation, choice and openness on the Web, we ask for your help to showcase how people love and use Firefox in your part of the world. Just send us a postcard with your message about Firefox and your FoxCard will be featured in our Mountain View or Paris offices. You can even win Firefox goodies when you send in your FoxCard. Check out our FoxCards page on Facebook or Spread Firefox for more information.

Every day, thousands of people tweet their Firefox questions. We wanted to set up a lightweight way for them to get answers right away from fellow Firefox users. That’s why we’re pleased to announce a new community care program called Army of Awesome!

Anyone with a Twitter account can join the Army of Awesome and reply to a tweet about Firefox. Many times it’s as simple as showing someone where to find the info they need. Just as we routinely rely on signposts to navigate streets, we’ve created some standard signpost messages so you can direct users to commonly searched pages.

Mozilla community members are known for being helpful and that spirit has been a key to Firefox’s success. You don’t have to be a Firefox expert to join the Army of Awesome – though of course experts are welcome! Simply choose a tweet, sign in with your Twitter account, and select the signpost message that will point the user in the right direction. Or, even better, create a personal response in your own words.

Go to the Army of Awesome page to try it out. Sending replies to users’ tweets takes only a few moments and goes a long way toward helping others have a better Web experience. If you’re looking for other ways to chip in, check out our new participation page full of quick and easy ways to spread Firefox!

Happy tweeting! And remember…good things come to those who tweet!
