• Bas has built upon his DirectWrite font backend, bug 517642, with a Direct2D cairo backend, bug 527707.
  • Direct2D is a hardware-accelerated, quite Cairo-like API for Windows 7/Windows Vista, and it interoperates with Direct3D too.

  • The Direct2D backend depends on DirectWrite for fonts because GDI can’t write to hardware-accelerated contexts.
  • This will be our second hardware-accelerated Cairo backend, after the OpenGL/DirectDraw backend used on the Tegra devices.
  • Along with DirectWrite, Microsoft has backported Direct2D to Windows Vista.
• Rob’s still working on the bug reports that have resulted in us turning Aero Peek off in 3.6.
  • He needs UX input on a number of the bugs: bug 522035, bug 526618, bug 527015 (easy one), bug 527156, bug 527158.

  • We discovered once 3.5.4 had been released that we had caused two topcrashes: bug 524462 and bug 525326. These were fallout from security bug fixes.

  • More testcases helps, and we’re adding more. But the nature of graphics code (handling user-provided data) implies that it’s very difficult to have fully complete test suites.
  • It’s very likely that these could have been caught in a beta period for 3.5.4. Since we already look at crash-stats, should we just extend beta periods? Should we make it part of the “new release” signoff that we haven’t introduced new topcrashes?
• GFX team focusing on blockers, Electrolysis, crashes, and performance.

• Found a scenario for stable cold startup numbers on Windows. Next step is to get a Talos patch up, and work with Rel/Eng to get it deployed into testing so we can see numbers on real Talos boxes.
• Rob Strong split up the update service in bug 311965, has most reviews (affects all toolkit apps) and is about ready to land. This showed a significant win on WinCE startup.
• Taras and Joel are working on bug 524202, tracking down exactly how and when dynamic library code is loaded. See this comment for a good summary of the issue.

• Bas has made a lot of progress on the DirectWrite font backend for Windows 7. There are lots of screenshots in bug 517642. There’s still a ways to go before this will be ready for prime time, but we’re getting great results.
• Jim has been having trouble reproducing a drag-and-drop cursor flickering problem on Windows. If you have seen cursor flickering, please weigh in on bug 521966.
• The WebGL standard has been submitted to the Khronos board for intellectual property considerations. This will be a 45-day process, after which the spec will be released for public review.

Startup Performance

Remeasuring 3.5 cold startup on WinXP is giving roller-coaster numbers, ups and downs in the >20% range between builds with changes that are seemingly innocuous. Focus this week is on figuring out how to get stable numbers there.

At all ranges in the graph, the 3.5 WinXP cold startup numbers are all showing a regression in 3.6/3.7… again. I’ll re-open that bug and work on figuring out a regression range. However, this is blocked on getting reliable numbers out of 3.5, see above.

• John Dagget’s ~20% cold startup improvement and ~4% warm startup improvement on Mac in bug 517045 landed on branch.

• Taras Glek’s work on combining the different preference files has landed (bug 507288)
• Alfred Kayser’s patch to increase throughput of JAR file reading has landed (bug 510844).
• Ryan landed bug 475289 to lazily initialize the engineMetadataService for an expected 20ms win.
• Ben Hsieh got some stat() removal landed in bug 510991. He’s got even more in bug 511761, just need bsmedberg review.
• I’m no longer able to reproduce the Windows cold startup regression from 3.5 to 3.6 reported in bug 517741. I turned off SuperFetch, which resulted in more stable numbers, but there was no visible regression, even in builds going back a couple of months. Juan tested on Windows XP and found the same. The current numbers show a 27-30% *improvement* in cold startup time on trunk, and up to 8% on 3.6.

GFX Update

• Really exciting work on WebGL implementation. Latest nightlies have WebGL turned on, and lots of demos are popping up.
  • For fun demos, see Mark Steele’s WebGL demos blog post.
• Decode-on-draw work continues; we think we’ve solved the strange performance hit we saw on OS X. We still have to finish the last couple of requirements (like bug 512260 and regressions) before turning it on.
• GFX has come to a tentative conclusion on Q4 goal planning.
  • We’ve decided to focus on performance, specifically responsiveness (scrolling). We’ll also be supporting the other performance work going on, like the Firefox team’s Ts work and Electrolysis.

• Necko: working on cross-process HttpChannels. Still early, hard to give ETA.

• Windowed plugins pretty close! some of the new plugin stream tests pass, and some basic NPObject remoting works. Trying to find answers to NPAPI unknowns in plugin-futures and generate more tests.
  • Lots of cleanup to do: remove singletons by adding context to the plugin host, make plugin instantiation and process launch asynchronous, deal with race conditions of constructors against other methods.
