Friends of the Tree

Aakash wrote in, “I’d like to nominate Aleksej as a friend of the tree for his great work in our latest Testday on Fennec 1.0 Beta 5. He filed 2 bugs on the day and, more importantly, acted as our resident community Testday host by greeting every person that joined the channel and sparking conversation throughout the day.”

I can speak from experience that this kind of testing and coordination help is hugely valued and critical to the success of our community testing program and so I’m thrilled to second Aakash’s nomination. -Asa

  • beta 3 refresh should be coming Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning

  • beta 3 includes a components directory lockdown feature – johnath to blog about the details early this week
  • code freeze for RC1 is scheduled for Wednesday but might be at risk; come to the Platform meeting tomorrow to discuss.

  • News from the CrashKill front:

    • Today’s discussion will be about how to determine if 3.6 will crash less than 3.5.x and 3.0.x. The way we do our crash report throttling makes comparing releases difficult–we have to guess on about five different variables when comparing releases.

    • Reminder: We now have the ability to block specific DLLs from loading. For the list of DLLs we intend to block, see bug 525103.
  • News from Electrolysis:
    • 4 blockers until out-of-process-plugins (OOPP) land in mozilla-central preffed off, hopefully this week… lots of small issues being found, but few major ones.

    • Firefox 3.7 to have OOPP enabled by default, Windows and Linux. There will be no multi-process tabs, nor mac support.
    • demo of Fennec with multi-process tabs available: beginning additional work to make it less hacky
  • GFX:
    • Hardware-accelerated rendering has been on everyone’s mind.

      • The Layers API has been pretty much finalized, and Robert O’Callahan and Bas Schouten have been looking into what will be necessary to implement it. Please take a look and see if the Layers API fits your needs!

      • Bas Schouten continues to tear things up. His mostly-complete DirectWrite font backend, bug 517642 has been enhanced with a new Direct2D cairo backend, bug 527707. Direct2D will be our first mainstream hardware accelerated backend.
    • WOFF, the Web font format pioneered by Mozilla, has been a big hit. John Daggett and Jonathan Kew attended ATypI 2009 in Mexico City to talk about it and other font-related developments, and John has a blog post about their presentation.
    • Also on the subject of fonts: Jonathan Kew and Behdad Esfahbod have been working on Harfbuzz, an advanced OpenType font shaper. Most recently, they spent a week in Toronto sprinting on the library, which we’re going to use for more consistent and performant font shaping on all platforms. You can learn more in bug 449292 or in Behdad’s blog post.
    • Jeff Muizelaar has been working on creating a scrolling performance test suite which the Graphics team wants to use to measure and improve Gecko’s interactive scrolling performance. If you know of any sites that are slow to scroll, please tell us in bug 527728.

  • Held a Fennec beta 5 testday last friday. Attendance has dipped below 30, but there was 7 bugs filed. Please pass the word out of future testdays! Next testday will be on Nov 20th, on L10n community testing.
  • Created a Preliminary Task List within the QA COG to help determine current projects/tasks for kids to sign up for (Independent High School in San Jose)
  • No November meetup, will resume in December

Test Development

  • Created final design test-agent code for Orodurin, got Windows Mobile XPCShell tests running both normally and on the device with the new design

  • Implemented changes to the crash automation project to help streamline the workflow
  • Worked with RelEng to bring up preliminary Ts Test for Windows Mobile, got it running in the RelEng framework (Thanks Aki!)

  • main development focus is on Firefox 3.6 Blockers
  • last week at the development and delivery meetings we decided to issue frequent updates to Firefox 3.6 Beta users on that update channel; aiming for the first update to be this week with:
    • DLL blacklisting patch (see bug 524904

    • syntax changes for CSS gradients (see bug 513395)
    • cycle-collector patch to stop cycle collection instead of crashing (see bug 521750)

  • News from the CrashKill front:

    • Now that we’ve shpped dbaron’s patch for bug 521750, we’re starting to see more movement from vendors who are causing the issue. Last week, I received responses from Move Networks, Relevant Knowledge (comScore), and DTToolbar and they claim to be making the required fixes to keep them from crashing the world.

    • For problem binaries where we can’t find fixes, we’ll be using dll blocklisting to keep them from loading. For details see bug 524904. This has landed already, and we’ll see it in the betas.

    • On the same day Firefox turns 5, Firefox also surpasses 25% worldwide market share for the very first time (according to Net Applications… their weekly reports are subscriber only, so I don’t have a link).


Evangelism

  • Firefox 3.6 documentation progressing nicely, on track to wrap up by ship.

  • The Web developer survey is still open – take a sneak preview at the results and help spread the word about it.
  • Mozilla participated at TPAC, discussing File API, Storage, security, DOM Events (including Multitouch) with all browser vendors


Labs

  • We released Jetpack 0.6 which adds APIs for preferences and menus. Check out Aza’s cool video!
  • This week we’re releasing the Jetpack Gallery, which like the Personas gallery gives writers of Jetpack features a convenient place to share them.
  • We also released Test Pilot 0.3, which uses the same technology as Jetpack to allow streaming in updates to extensions.
  • Weave 1.0 Beta is coming out this week. We’re hoping to get out Weave 1.0 proper by the end of the year, so please help us “eat our own dogfood” by trying out Weave as part your daily browsing – ESPECIALLY if you use Fennec!


Developer Tools

  • The first preview release of Bespin Embedded is due out this week.

  • We’re also planning to have generated API docs available to help people who are hacking on Bespin.


Add-ons

  • Total compatibility up to 45% with 3.6.* (up from 34% last week)

  • Hard work on the update queue has reduced it from 201 on 11/1 to 129 today.
    • Wait time is now down to roughly one week and we hope to get it under a week soon

    • We’re going to focus on nomination queue with goal of getting both down to manageable levels


Webdev

  • AMO 5.3 froze last Thursday. Launch scheduled for 11/12.

  • SUMO 1.4.2 launched last Thursday.

  • Seamonkey 2 marketing materials.

FxFy is a great implementation of the open web, with web dev and localizers working to overlay subtitles using javascript on a open video. Blog post to come.


Foundation Updates

  • Mark blogged about a One Mozilla strategy to use a unified Mozilla brand across all of our public communication. This doesn’t change the fact that Mozilla is made up of distinct legal organizations, but focuses on what we’re all doing instead of how we’re organized.
  • Two weeks until the Jetpack for Learning design challenge deadline. Inviting all smart add on developer and educators to submit ideas. It’s simple.

  • KaiRo wants to nominate Philip Chee (Ratty on IRC) for sending an add-on compatibility message for SeaMonkey 2.0 to several forums and now going through authors to send individual emails for making their add-ons compatible with 2.0 – of course, all on his free time.

  • Anthony Hughes writes in “This week I would like to nominate Aleksej as a friend of the tree for coming out and contributing to both days of our 2-day Mozmill Testscripting Testday last week.”
  • Andreas wrote in “I would like to nominate Graydon Hoare (Mozilla) and Rick Reitmaier (Adobe) for their work on merging Mozilla’s and Adobe’s versions of the NanoJIT backend. With completion of this herculean Sisyphus task Adobe and Mozilla will be able to jointly develop NanoJIT instead of having to maintain two individual versions of it. This will also broaden our test coverage and test backend changes and optimizations against 2 virtual machines, our JavaScript engine as well as Adobe’s Flash Player VM.”
  • Gozer wrote in (a week ago, sorry for the delay) “I wish to nominate Henry Nester for friend of the tree. He is our #1 thunderbird 3 tester by far and a key part of the push to Thunderbird 3 [at the top of this chart] [1] He’s also a primo tester of .de locale build and an awesome spot check tester of localized builds (special note for ludo+gozer) [2] and also a great bug reporter [3]

    • Published a new Easy ARIA tip in response to a result from WebAIM’s second screen reader survey results.

    • Testday: 2 day Testscripting with MozMill 1.3 even was held last week. It was hosted by Seneca College student and previous Mozilla intern, ashughes. See Testday Results

    • Recently found 7 people interested in getting involved via VolunteerMatch and http://www.mozilla.org/contribute/

  • Design Lunch this week is Monday, 1pm pacific time in Ten-Forward, the topic is Jetpack, and the presenters are students from Parsons New School of Design participating in the Design Challenge.

Firefox 3.6 (Namoroka)

  • Firefox 3.6 Beta 1 scheduled to be released Wednesday, October 28

  • nightly and beta users are encouraged to help us by reporting add-on compatibility
  • Paul and others will be landing a change which should speed up session restore for users with many windows and tabs
  • we’d like as many people as possible to test recent nightlies and the upcoming beta with Windows 7; there’s some concern about how well the implementation of Aero Peek tab previews are working (see bug 474056 and dependencies)
  • there’s an ongoing discussion about how we plan on updating Firefox 3.5 users to Firefox 3.6 when it’s ready for release

Firefox Future

  • Stephen Horlander continues to QB discussions about changes to the Firefox 3.7 theme on the wiki and his blog

  • Alex Faaborg and the UX team are looking at how to simplify our Preferences panels
  • Jennifer Boriss, Dave Townsend and Nick Nguyen are looking at updating the Add-on manager and Extensions API to be more flexible
  • we’re also starting to think about how to phase in process separation in Firefox 3.7 and 4.0


Gecko

  • In our CrashKill meetings we are still digging through top crashers and reaching out to vendors. We still need contacts for vendors who produce top crashing add-ons. If you have contacts at one of these that you can share, please comment in the bug. Also, if you want to keep the contact info confidential, you can mark your comment as private as well.

  • Thanks to BitDefender who is pushing out fixes to their toolbar in response to our outreach. It’s still early, but we’re watching crash reports to make sure we see those crash numbers drop.

Foundation Updates

  • Help turn the open Web into a rich learning environment and explore new possibilities for using Firefox add-ons to support learning online. We’re announcing the start of the Jetpack for Learning Design Challenge, sponsored by the Mozilla Foundation with support from the MacArthur Foundation. This is just one of many things going on with Mozilla Education.

  • A dormant accounts policy is being implemented; if you haven’t used a particular SCM account for more than six months, it will be deactivated for security reasons. You can file a bug to get it reactivated – this should be a simple and quick process. Let us know if it’s not.
  • Mozilla Drumbeat is moving into pilot mode over the coming weeks. As part of this, Mark posted a call for sample content to include on the Drumbeat website currently being mocked up. Join the weekly Drumbeat call on Monday at 8AM PST or comment on the blog posts to share your ideas.

  • Welcome Ehsan Akhgari, now a full time employee of Mozilla, working out of the Toronto office! Ehsan was primarily responsible for private browsing and will continuing his work there as well as working with Robert O’Callahan.

  • Electrolysis (E10s)
    • Windowed plugins mostly working (Windows and Linux)

    • Windowless plugins working on Linux, to work on Windows soon. May have slow performance until work on asynchronous painting is done.
    • Plan to land the existing code into mozilla-central, preffed off, as soon as some blockers are done. See bug 523094 for details and a dependency tree.
    • Have very hacky demos of multi-process browsing
    • Working on getting Fennec working with multi-process browsing.
  • GFX
    • Robert O’Callahan, Jeff Muizelaar and Bas Schouten have been iterating on an API and requirements for a Layers API, akin to Core Animation, that will enable easy hardware acceleration and certain types of animation. We welcome everyone’s input.

    • Windows 7 support (bug 474052) has been coming along well. Aero Peek has landed in 3.6, but Jump Lists and download status in the Windows 7 task bar will have to wait for 3.7.
    • Bas Schouten has been tearing stuff up. In addition to contributing to the Layers API mentioned above, he came up with a proof-of-concept full-screen video implementation using OpenGL (bug 510057) and has been working on making our font rendering in Windows 7 significantly better by using DirectWrite (bug 517642).
  • CrashKill meetings will continue. We really dig into details of crashes and people seem to find the in-depth discussions on how to resolve a particular crash useful.

  • Speaking of press, there was a lot of coverage for our plugin checker. Congrats to the team for doing a great job. As for what’s next, here’s a quick list of ideas:
    • Localize plugin checker for other locales (in progress)

    • Integrate this experience with the Firefox client. Firefox will identify vulnerable plugins and help you update them.
    • Create a self-service panel for vendors to update their plugin info as new releases come out.
    • Create an open directory for all plugin information (sort of like Plugindoc but dynamic)
    • Evangelize plugin detection via an embeddable widget — get it out on Wordpress, etc.
    • Integrate with our crash reporting system so we have a report card/dashboard for which plugins are most crashy

Staś posted in .l10n about choosing search engines for localized Fennec. Targeting end of October. The guidelines can be found at L10n:Mobile/Productization. 34 per-locale bugs filed so far, all blocking the tracking bug (bug fennec10-l10n-search) (check a slightly more detailed view, too).

Gecko

  • Last week, on Tuesday, we attempted to freeze for 1.9.2 beta 1. There were several remaining issues at the close of the usual dev meeting, but the consensus seemed to be that we were good to freeze. Still, two bugs (bug 517355 and bug 517909) kept us from freezing and we’re still working on one of them. The last one is a perf regression that is taking the time of Jason Orendorff, Boris, and Andreas. Andreas produced a couple of patches that will hopefully fix the problem, but we need to see numbers today to know for sure.

  • At today’s CrashKill we will go over top crash assignments again. Also, we may be at a point where this meeting isn’t necessary as we’re tracking crashes closely now. We’ll have that discussion then.

  • L10n presentation summaries from Prague

  • L10n presentation summaries from Chile
  • Ongoing work with l10n for both web and product for FF 3.6 and Fennec
  • L10n localizer reports coming soon
  • Feedback from Prague is that Localizers are feeling much better about the patches going in to 3.6, compared to 3.5. In particular not as much back and forth. Partly this would be due to 3.7 not being too far out and thus “no” is a better answer.

  • Last week we proposed a set of goals for Q4. I’ve received some great feedback, and there will be changes.

  • We’re going to be changing/removing a few goals in order for us to focus on crashes on a massive scale. Friday evening, we formed a small team to kill top crashers. Over the next several weeks we plan to dramatically reduce those crashes.
  • Speaking of crashes, last week the CoolIris team released an update to their plug-in that triggered a spike in crashes in the plug-in, resulting in their plug-in being the top crasher in Firefox 3 and 3.5. They worked over the weekend, along with guys on our team who helped identify the issue, to back out the changes.
  • It’s spikes like the above that demonstrate the importance of completing out of process plug-ins. Last Friday, I saw a demo–and I hope we see a blog post/video demo soon–of flash running out of process in our browser, where killing the process running flash left the browser running fine. Maybe Ben Turner can share that with the world soon?  ;)

    • You may recall that when we quizzed you about the #1 reason, the answer was a tie between “crashes” and “just temporary” (this was back in June). Now looking at the data trended over time, “crashes” has since shown a significant increase. We’ll likely blog with some insights.

  • Design Lunch this week is on about:weave redesign and the currently running Weave Design Challenge.
  • The video from last week’s Design Lunch, about the redesign of the Download Manager and notifications for Firefox 4. (The video seems to be weirdly sped up, which makes some of the speech hard to follow. I’m going to look into whether it’s fixable.)

    • Pushed out QMO 1.1. New features: search users, all projects list, pagination highlighting on the qmo blog, cron (performs maintenance tasks for now), mollom (stopping spam). Total of 95 high priority bugs fixed! Big thanks to Paul, Aakash, Raymond and Tomcat for getting this done!!
    • Next community meet-up is on Wednesday, Sept, 23. Topic is Feature Exploration/Live Testing.
    • [Dev day] is Friday, October 2nd. Members of the QA team will be talking about testing projects and how to get involved.
    • Next OpenSource meet-up in Munich is September 25th.
  • Accessibility: Blogged about recent fixes to make tables more accessible.

Test Development

  • Working with Catlee (who is a GodSend) to get Mozmill Integrated with Buildbot

  • Investigating and fixing Python isues on WINMO and WINCE for Mochitest & XPCShell & Talos foundation work
  • Adding capabilities to the test plugin to create more interesting behaviors for testing (by expanding it to use more of the NPAPI interfaces), extending mochitests for test capabilities at the same time.
  • Completed SMIL animation tests
  • Held the Test Dev Sprint Review, beginning to define our next set of goals for the next set of sprints. More information is here.

Foundation Updates

  • Dormant Accounts Policy now finalized; if you don’t checkin for N months, your SCM accounts may be disabled and Bugzilla security bug access turned off. (The value of N is still to be determined, by experimentation.) You can, of course, come back and ask for them to be turned back on.
  • Gerv working on an experimental RESTful Bugzilla HTTP API to allow people to more easily innovate with clients and new task-specific UIs. Hope to have something testable in two weeks. API design comments and use cases are most welcome.
  • A new version of the Internet Health Check will be available later today or early tomorrow. It is now even easier to do. Please have a look here and promote this during Mozilla Service Week and on OneWebDay.
