• Get permission from Google to use their geolocation JSON service [KaiRo]. Contact at Google says: “We don’t have a good estimate for when GLS will be opening up more broadly, but I will be sure to let you know when we take that step. Sorry that I can not be more specific at this time.” – We can only wait right now.
  • KaiRo emailed Google again more than 8 weeks ago and again 5 weeks ago, no reply yet, even though the MoCo geolocation contact has poked the Google contact as well.

SeaMonkey 2.0 Final

• Shipped on October 27!

• 167 fixed-seamonkey2.0 bugs (all post 2.0b2)!
• Pushed venkman perf hit and GetDefaultReader to 2.0.1.
• 2.0 has 19 official languages including en-US, as well as a beta/unofficial Turkish version (requested by localizer due to incomplete L10n). More to come for 2.0.1.
• What are we going to do with regards to 1.9.1.6?
  • 2.0.1 will be based on 1.9.1.6 now as 1.9.1.5 was a crash-fixer released on Thursday 5th November, and KaiRo did not have enough time to generate a release that week.

  • Firefox is in slushy code freeze and is on schedule for a mid-December release.
• Feedback
  • Many positive messages.

  • Also many posts with problems, a few common threads among those:
    • Failure to launch when installed over 1.x – can we do something with removed-files? Ratty has filed bug 526202 on this issue.
      • Components dumped by extensions into the application/components/ directory are definitely a problem.
    • Some things already mentioned in Known Issues.
    • Profile migration failures – not sure how to diagnose these. Things like missing all passwords in migration are strange, but hard to debug especially if we don’t have access to the users system.
    • The migration experience for people with multiple profiles is sub-optimal and we need to find some way of making this better.
    • Quicklaunch from SeaMonkey 1.1.x still enabled, need to see if it’s possible/wanted to disable Quicklaunch during SeaMonkey 2 setup (should not be that difficult). IanN keep an eye on this issue (bug 526204).
    • The new Password and Form Managers seem to be hard for people to grasp, do we need docs on those so we can point people to them? BenoitRen to file a bug and to contact people who can potentially help to do the documentation. There is an existing bug, bug 463903 for form autocomplete.
      • One immediate issue is for a form history editor to edit/delete incorrect entries. There is a Form History Manager extension for SeaMonkey 2.0 that can do this. But we need this as a native function of SeaMonkey for a better user experience. Perhaps we can use that extension as a starting point.

      • Ratty to file a but to track a native Forms editor.
    • For some users cut&paste isn’t working for some Windows 7 users. Specifically, nothing gets pasted (bug 525601.
      • This has been traced to the McAfee Site Advisor component of the McAfee Internet Security Suite (also shipped with other McAfee products and with Yahoo security suites that are rebranded McAfee). Latest reports indicate that this problem only surfaced after RC2 because in previous versions of the McAfee Security Suite, the Site Advisor was an optional component. However the in latest versions the Site Advisor cannot be deselected. Also users with McAfee subscriptions who auto-updated got the Site Advisor whether they wanted it or not.

      • The McAfee techs would like a developer from the SeaMonkey side to assist them in tracking down the problem. Do we have someone with the required skillset? Perhaps Neil.
    • Some users upgrading from 1.1 who never used a master password are now being prompted at every startup for a (non-existent) password. In 1.1 it was possible to set a master password but not use it if the preferences were set that way. Some users might have accidentally set a master password and forgot about it and this could have been migrated to the 2.0 profile. Unfortunately in 2.0 if a master password is set then it is used.
    • We seem to have accidentally migrated from 1.1 all the “browser.toolbars.showbutton.*” preferences when we shouldn’t. The most common case appears to be the home button. Our button pref listener are still active because of the Go and Search buttons in the URL bar.
      • Ratty to file a bug to fix or workaround the problem in 2.0.1 for already migrated profiles. Also possibly get someone to look at the profile migrator code to not migrate these preferences.

Feature List, Planning

Bug statistics for last two (full) weeks: 65 new, 20 fixed, 58 triaged.

• High rate of new bugs immediately after 2.0 release but declining.

• Fixing rate down as we all take a breath after this.
• Triage rate up from 34 at last meeting.

• Thunderbird mass-mailed Thunderbird extension authors on AMO reminding them to update their extensions for Thunderbird 3.0. We should do a similar mass mailing targeting two groups:
  • Existing SeaMonkey extensions that haven’t been upgraded to 2.0.

  • Firefox and Thunderbird extension authors encouraging them to make their extensions compatible with SeaMonkey 2.0.
  • Ratty filed AMO bug 527919. The way forward appears to be that we draft one or more messages and AMO will take care of sending these out to extension developers.
• EOL date for SeaMonkey 1.1?
  • The plans for Gecko 1.8 are rather murky at the moment. KaiRo will probably try to get a clearer view when a 1.8.1.24 will be prepared possibly in December.

  • The former needs at least a core patch landing for 1.9.1.5, the latter needs a new patch, we need progress on both fronts!
• RC2 (and therefore probably final) has 19 official languages including en-US, as well as a beta/unofficial Turkish version (requested by localizer due to incomplete L10n). Any further L10n changes/additions go into 2.0.1 now.
• Schedule:
  • All code is hard frozen on the relbranch, 1.9.1-based code is open for patches approved for 2.0.1 now.
    • This code is being forked off into comm-1.9.1 this week (Thursday?), comm-central will be completely open for 2.1-targeted work then.
  • If no roadblocks are found in RC2 testing, we will convert it to final in about a week.
  • We have set October 27 as the tentative release date (in sync with FF 3.5.4, btw).

Some discussion on exactly where, and in what format to package the files (theme? extension?) however no consensus was reached.

  • The first one is quite an issue for Mac users according to stefanh. We need to check with stefanh on options for working round this bug.
  • Mnyromyr will look into the Mac-sidebar-blocker tonight.
  • [KaiRo] I feel safe on generating RC1 without 483282 (venkman perf hit) fixed, btw – I’d like to get it fixed for final, but with Mnyromyr backing out the core patch for it from trunk, I doubt we can do much by 1.9.1.4 and SM2.0 final.
  • [mcsmurf] bug 452465 will be checked in today bug 471346 won’t make 2.0, I’m quite sure of that 2.0.x maybe then.

  • We don’t do release notes for RCs as due to their version settings, they point to the final relnotes. But we need to relnote any known crashes / performance issues. We can possibly “misuse” the final relnote doc for noting issues in RC1.

  • String freeze passed on Oct 1, locales starting to opt in.

  • Code freeze TODAY midnight PDT!
  • Spin first RC tomorrow if possible, with locales that are ready.

  • [KaiRo] Bascially after SeaMonkey 2.0 and KompoZer 0.8 (both expected this/next month), we should do a clone of comm-central+mozilla-central in a user space on hg.m.o and try to get things running there, then merge back either the repository or the patches.

  • We also should look into getting some build machines to do at least nightly build cycles.
  • Ideally, KaiRo can get machines into the SeaMonkey pool and we might be able to get the builds into the SeaMonkey buildmaster.
  • The main issue there is hardware/VMs, but KaiRo needs to talk to Mozilla IT about that topic in any case.
  • If KompoZer becomes an official Community Project, that might be simpler. Kaze is working on this at the moment.

  • Thunderbird might be string freezing shortly earlier, code freezing possibly later, but going with a longer period to actual final.

• Branch planning is up in the air, Thunderbird drivers seem to think branching very closely to releasing their final is good, KaiRo thinks branching should happen before spinning our first RC. No compromise reached as of now.

The code freeze period for us should be fairly short, if we have no blockers left on Sep 1, we can do builds on Sep 2 and unfreeze immediately. The string freeze is the real impact.
• Tabmail is the big missing feature.
  • Should be in final review stages, biggest part is probably IanN’s review.
• The API changes of bug 474701 would be nice to get, Lightning uses some part of it, filed bug 509324 for that.
• This is our last beta, and that means that September 1st is also feature freeze for the 2.0 series! Exceptions will only be granted in rare and really-high-value cases.
• Do we have to look for bugs that may need help making the string freeze?

  • We are already running a configuration that is build-wise the same as having an actual branched setup, and in terms of having builds for trunk and branch, we have things up and running.

  • In terms of running tests on both, we are at least missing two machines which were promised to us, KaiRo is working with IT and community giving to get that resolved.
  • But even with those machines, we’ll be overloaded unless the machines magically get significantly faster. We’ll need to take a deeper look into what to do about that later.

• Worked a lot on the Beta 1 release, and published it in 17 languages (release tracker: bug 504150)

• Triaged all bugs in the Build Config component
• More work on the release harness leading up to the beta – bug 493451 resolved with using it for production
• Some small style improvements on the SeaMonkey website, also created the new language matrix for the beta download page
• Managed L10n opt-in process for beta
• Worked on gathering a number of statistical data on my SeaMonkey dev site – weekly bug statistics since 1998, counts for release radar queries
• As always, my blog has more detailed status about my work.

• Provided a branch patch for bug 483980 Allow history/bookmark observer components to register with a startup category (this would fix bug 484175 History Import from SeaMonkey 1.1.x is not working).

• The patch for bug 505525 nsWindowsShellService.cpp build failure due to gfxIImageFrame removal, needs work so that it also works with static builds on mozilla-central.
• Triaged some bugs resulting from users testing the new SeaMonkey 2 Beta 1.

• Get permission from Google to use their geolocation JSON service [KaiRo]. Contact at Google says: “We don’t have a good estimate for when GLS will be opening up more broadly, but I will be sure to let you know when we take that step. Sorry that I can not be more specific at this time.” – We can only wait right now.

• Triage of the remaining blocker nominations?

• Beta 1 freeze today at 23:50 PDT
• Blocker bug 484175 (History Import from SeaMonkey 1.1.x is not working): how can we progress? Do we need to really block this Beta on that problem?
  • The fix depends on back-porting bug 483980 from trunk back to 1.9.1.

  • Nobody else seems to have noticed the problem (no duplicates) and there is a workaround.
  • No objections to moving this bug from b1+ to b1- and b2+ and to relnote it.
• We need start a wiki page to list the things we should relnote for B2 including the password issue.
• Tabmail is still missing. It needs a bit more work and reviews, but it’s reaching a usable state. It will not make this beta so we will push this to b2.
• We are ready to roll 2.0b1 builds as soon as we have L10n cutoff.

• Tabmail is the largest missing feature.
  • Prerequisite for Lightning which we would like to support in final.
• According to Standard8 a rough estimate for the Thunderbird 3.0b4 cycle would be four to eight weeks.

  • bug 474622 Enable action keys (Del, Enter, Space) and double click in new Download Manager – landed

  • bug 490464 Update the Download pref pane for use with new DLMGR – landed
• Toolbar customization aftermath:
  • bug 481862 We still need small button icons for modern in MailNews. Ratty will work with Misak to get the small icons finished.
• bug 460960 Port Thunderbird tabbed interface to MailNews.
  • A new patch has been submitted and is undergoing reviews. Most of the remaining issues are cosmetic.
• bug 456757 Modern theme update. prometeo has stepped up to work on this.
  • No News.
• bug 460699 Make the default theme look better on mac.
  • stefanh has done some work on Mac but hasn’t posted anything new yet.
• bug 348720 New icon set for “SeaMonkey Default Theme”.

  • We need to check if OpenSearch can support all our existing functionality, for example the INTEPRETS section in Sherlock search plugins. Mnyromyr will check on that, and on how extensible the Firefox code is.

  • We probably need to move this item to either Beta2 or 2.next.
• bug 460953 Port jminta’s kill-rdf to SeaMonkey where applicable.
  • There isn’t any urgent need for progress on this as long as we don’t break. It might be good for extensions if we to convert our folder pane to be JS-driven e.g. calendar wants to put items there.
