Wired, February 15th, 2008: For software purchases, Chuang says, Apple will be effectively acting as an editor, providing a unified platform, vetting offerings and highlighting choices from among a diverse and numerous field of developers.
This blog, July 9th, 2007: It’s also unlikely that Apple will allow a PC-like open environment on the iPhone: expect rigid distribution terms that ensure E.T. For iPhone will not appear. The carriers’ interests are also served by this model, because it prevents VOIP and IM applications. While a freely-available SDK may appear, distribution will almost certainly follow the Nintendo model.

You know, given that I am not to sure that developers would enjoy using the SDK. Given that there will not be free-rain over what is created, if iTunes is left as the ONLY distribution model.
As much as I would like to assume that Apple would not shot themselves in the foot like that. I have the feeling that is exactly what they will do. In many ways, this is a little worst than the Nintendo model… but people love the Wii, so I can assume that Apple maybe able to survive this too.
