l10n Server

December 6th, 2006 by seth bindernagel

A few weeks ago, someone posted the following suggestion for something for us to consider on my blog:

“how about to host Fx/Tb/Bz etc l10n team’s their own repos/sites? the last month, German l10n person’s domain was expired so people could not take files. that makes me think this ;-) # now most of bugzilla l10n use sf.net for repos pub space.”

We have been mulling over this idea and I will be putting a proposal for final review this Friday. If all goes well, it looks like we will have something in place for people in the L10N community to use. What needs to be determined is how to engage everyone to use this as a productive workspace that does not expose Mozilla in any unanticipated or harmful way. Frankly, it’s not my expertise, so that is why the selection committee will be reviewing this on Friday to determine what is the next best step. Please look for an update then.

  1. Another benefit of Mozilla’s official hosting for I10n teams – lesser problems with domains regulation (all I10n domains may be covered by mozilla.org/local mozilla representative domain payed by Mozilla.com). Sourceforge hosting is far from ideal due heavy load and lack of useful resources for developers (Bugzilla/bonsai for example).

    Just my 5c to discussion.

what should we do with this server in the short and long run. In the sort run we can use it for for simple tasks like file sharing for translation packages and builds that need to be moved around for localization efforts. We will need further legal reviews and approvals to set up things like blogs, forums, and other content postings.

Seth, Axel and I will be working on procedures and policies for getting access to to the sever and and the kinds of things that can be posted there in the next couple of weeks, but we can use your opinions on the kind of things that the server should be used for.

    Thanks
