Taipei Wrap; On to Osaka
Seth S, Gen and I finished up in Taipei on Tuesday. (Gen actually left on Monday.) To sum up the Taiwanese experience, I felt that the friends of Mozilla and everyone we met warmly welcomed us to their city and showed us a wonderful time. We had some time to see a few historic locations, like the National Museum and Chang Kai Shek memorial. We also spoke at the Blogger conference and then the Open Source Conference on Sunday.
While we were in Taipei, we met with the Mozilla community members and learned a great deal from them about what they are doing to build and empower their local members. Tzu-Chiang Liu (T.C.) and Bob Chao have been been leading the charge for the Taiwanese community and have been doing a terrific job. T.C. gave some interesting background about the connectivity of the Taiwanese population. The Taiwanese population is ~24 million with nearly 99% of people having a land line telephone. A lot of people have mobile phones. Of the 24 million, TC said that 6 to 9 million people are online in some fashion. It is fair to say that most of Mozilla’s traction has been very viral and driven by the excellent work of our community there. Thanks T.C., Bob, Jose, O-Three and everyone else! Here are some photos from the visit.
We hope to find good ways to support our active community members there. It is an admirable task localizing what we do into Traditional Chinese script and Mozilla is incredibly thankful for all they have done. You can see their work at http://www.moztw.org.
Seth and I are now in Osaka preparing for our Firefox 3 and community talks before the Nippon Sun User Group.
