Mozilla Developer T-Shirt

Don’t just support Mozilla; support the free and open web with this t-shirt.

“The background for our wee friend Kit and the “Don’t Hurt The Web” design came from a conversation I had with Chris Beard at the launch event for Firefox 2. Chris was talking about possibly creating a visual with a fox that would be far too cute to ever harm. A few hours later I whipped up an illustration and Kit was born and introduced to the attendees! Now looking at that sad little face, how could anyone ever hurt the web!”

  1. Gérard Talbot Says:

    Hello,

1- “Please don’t hurt the web, use open standards”
should not be identified with the mascot – sort of – of a single browser from a single browser manufacturer. The whole idea of web standards is exactly above browser manufacturer because web standards do not target or specify a single browser, and not even a single medium.

developer.mozilla.org does not have the monopoly of web standards knowledge and is certainly *not* the ideal place to claim web standards compliance. The last time I edited a webpage at MDC, I was notified by email to stop using <p> and </p> and to just use the wiki code… and I was editing the webpage “Using web standards in your web pages” hosted at MDC! Totally unbelievable!

2- Mozilla.org has not been active in the Tech Evangelism department for years now: no one can seriously claim otherwise.
Creating a T-shirt of this type won’t change an iota for millions of webpages which do not render as expected by their authors. Making more senseless back-end efforts into supporting MSIE implementation bugs – that’s right, MSIE implementation bugs – will not solve any problem, will not help anyone and will not improve the web. So, on one hand, some people can wear a T-Shirt about protecting, caring about web standards and, at the same time, use a browser that is becoming more and more IE-bugward, therefore removing any need to follow and comply with W3C web standards. Blatant contradiction and a major one.

3- “Please don’t hurt the web, use open standards”
should not be referring to mistreated animal, animal cruelty, wildlife animal trembling in fear, anxiety, stress, fearing for his life, etc.. I totally and unequivocally disagree with the use of that image: it sends a wrong message. It misuses the image of animal cruelty to convey badly battered markup code, hacks of all sorts in webpages, etc.. There is a huge difference between the 2.
Same thing with promoting a browser with a woman in a sexy outfit or with obvious sex-appeal: it should not be acceptable advertisement.
If you’re selling a web concept, a web browser or a web [development] organization, you should not be “selling” or conveying pity, sex or anything of the sort.

4- The very first place where web standards have been truly mistreated is in store.mozilla.org. Period.

    Bug 305106
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=305106
    and bug 326708
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=326708
are where efforts should be put and not onto selling a better T-shirt that webstandards.org or the W3C or that the SPCA or WWF (or animal defense groups) should be selling. Whoever is responsible for such decision truly misunderstand the real issues involved here and the communication of these.

“Mozilla offers the best implementations of Internet standards.” Yes, right, .… except in its own store selling T-shirt about not hurting the web and using web standards that are ignored in broad day light in its own webpages.

  2. frank Says:

The rest of us can quietly thank the powers that be that Mr. Talbot isn’t in charge of marketing or party-planning.

  3. Flip Says:

No kidding. The shirt is cute, fun and gets across a very important message.

I will be ordering many smalls and dressing up all my friends’ kids! :-)

  4. Scott Walker Says:

Please add XXL shirts to the lineup. If the shirts really run small, as the description warns, I will need that size. Bigger people support open standards too!

  5. patty! Says:

like Scott Walker says, please do add XXL. im fat so i’ll probably need it. I can wear XL but i think that those XL shirts are like L.

  6. Bob Nelson Says:

    Congratulations to the FireFox Team.

    Like those T-shirt designs.

    Best wishes for continued success,

  7. Joahna Says:

I want to know who peed in Mr. Talbots wheaties? Probably a cute little fox…..
If the rest of the wold can design catchy graphics for their companies…then by golly so can you!
I want to see him chew out every other business and see how far it gets him…

  8. Billy Says:

Can I get this is a onesie? I’d like to get one for my baby.

  9. Ben Sawatzky Says:

I need you to add one more size to your shirts xxl thanks

  10. Sam Says:

I don’t know. I think Gerard Talbot makes some good points. Firefox is hardly synonymous with web standards. He changed my mind about buying the T.

    -Sam

  11. Collin Says:

Same here, I agree that an abused animal has nothing to do with firefox. Ive changed my mind – poor concept.

(BTW – the sex appeal comment – who thinks of godaddy??? :P )

  12. Will Says:

Lighten up, folks. It’s a great tee shirt!

  13. Kiefer Says:

Love that shirt, any chance of releasing on the international store?
It will cost us in the UK around $100 after shipping and tax.

Still love the concept, would like to get my hands on one of these

  14. Thomas Says:

I would have purchased today, if I was “normal” but hey, XXL or XXXL should be available, even if they cost more.

Those of us that are not necessarily little or “short”, me being 6′3″ and 295 can’t fit in a “small running” XL. Even better XXL-T! :)

  15. PepeLapiu Says:

So the foxy logo is really cute but some people with politically correct agendas think it’s bad practice ….. go save a seal and leave T-shirts alone, no cute little foxes were harmed in the making of those T-shirts. As for those who think fox is turning into IE, here’s a clue: Fox is free to you and if you don’t like it you are free to get the source code and make it the way you want ….. or shut up, get what’s offered to you for free and say THANX!! As for me, you will find me on the street with a cutee foxy T on.

    Cheers,
    PepeLapiu :)

  16. Guy Says:

The logo is cute, the real fox (as opposed to the cartoon ones) is not an endangered species and the software you are crying about is free and no one forces you to use it …… anymore questions? Re-install IE, go save a whale and don’t waste your time being so much of a hater.

  17. Ancient Language Guy Says:

The shirt is dope. Whatever the marketing premise, it will get people to lean towards open standards and perhaps use and demand them with greater vigor. Times are changing with globalization and for those developers that are on the “proprietary only” track will find only an ever-shrinking consumer base.

Open standards FTW peeps and welcome to the 21st century!

  18. shuklesh Says:

am using firefox from past 2 years its cool and i love the extensions the provide hey people keep going we are there to support u i love firefox and this t-shirt is very cute

  19. megx Says:

    the shirt is sooo cute.
    it gets the message across!

  20. TREVOR Says:

    Gérard Talbot…

    HAS NO LIFE!

    ITS A T-SHIRT MAN!

    WOOHOO GO MOZILLA!

    M4L! (Mozilla 4 Life)

  21. Tenny Says:

may try to come out with V-neck shirts with existing designs….it may be welcoming also. thanks

  22. Heather Says:

Wow. You’re really gonna fundamentally disagree with the marketing efforts just because you think the fox is not a perfect match for the message they are trying to convey? Do you pay attention to marketing strategies and how they are used? It’s not an 100% honest field. Fallacies occur everywhere. The point is, it’s a generally appealing shirt with a wide range of appeal. Therefore it will probably sell well. They got what they wanted, and in the end the customer has a shirt he or she likes. Go implement your objectifying virtues into a subject that’s not so null and void of meaning.

  23. ja Says:

    All of
    you are so bored!!

  24. David Hale Says:

Love this cute shirt! It rocks!

  25. nina Says:

t shirts are looking profesional and nice, i like more those that are not black. it is very nice.

  26. Michelle Says:

The shirt is great! I would have liked the mozilla TM under the verbiage on the front but that is really just a “happy to glad” type of change. :) I am ordering the shirt. I wish it came on a coffee mug as well!

  27. Kathleen Says:

I am an artist and I love the cute furry animal it made me look! Then I read the message so………. I say this T Shirt works.

  28. Sean Says:

Just to add a comment based on my design…

The fox is sad in the t-shirt because devs who dont use open standards hurt their projects, not the actual fox itself.

It states “Please don’t hurt the web”, not “Please don’t hurt me”.

If there is a PETW or an SPCW, I apologize for making light of web cruelty.

  29. Ella Says:

How cute! Such a sweet way of getting a message across! Love it! Need it to be avaialbel for us in the UK too!! I want one!!!

  30. listrum brooks Says:

does the shirt come in higher sizes i need it bigger i really love that shirt

  31. Pasan Says:

Nice t shirt. Keep it up.

  32. lisa Says:

Do you have little kid sizes? My 4 yo is the little fox and would love to have his t-shirt.

  33. boid Says:

this design resembles Shrek 2’s “cat”, so that’s the point, nothing to do with abused animals.

  34. Matthew Says:

Firefox is a fairly new web browser. Its only version 2, its open source, and it WILL HAVE BUGS! Is it Mozilla’s fault that everything is encoded to IE standards? Is it Mozilla’s fault that there is bugs that are not fixed? Is it Mozilla’s fault that some like Talbot think that this shirt is anything more than a cute way of saying “Stick it to the man, show companies like Microsoft that they cannot get away by charging hundreds for MS Office, and Adobe for Photoshop”? NO! This is a Shirt with only ONE message put in a cute way: Use open source programs! So yea, Firefox may be full of bugs, but i would rather use a program full of bugs that never causes me any errors or problems at all (except for some pages that use programming language that FF cant display correctly, very few), than use a browser thats constantly being updated with “A security issue has been located in which a computer from a remote location could take control of your computer”.!

    Talbot: Its a shirt!

  35. PFM Says:

That looks just like our dog so I’ll have to buy one. Keep up the great work.

    PFM

  36. emil Says:

I really loved Kit when he was first released, a great way to show your support for open standards, I will surely buy one

  37. I(click)Firefox Says:

This is awesome. Don’t hurt the internet is the best shirt they have. I want to see more funny shirts like this one. The other shirts are ok :| but maybe flare them up a bit.

  38. Bill B Says:

You got the Fox, now add the Fire…..

  39. James Sappenfield Says:

    G. Talbot,
    That is not a fox.
    That is a FIRE-fox.
Note: fire-foxes are distinct from foxes in that a fire-fox is on fire. Now, for example, a fox could be on fire, but I guarantee you that the fox would not look that sad or that cute. It would be screaming and running in circles, definitely a case of animal abuse. BUT, a FIRE-fox on fire would simply be what it is meant to be, a fire-fox. That is why fire-foxes don’t exist in the real world yet.
2nd Note: No animals were harmed in the designing of the t-shirt. Although that fire-fox is indeed on fire, I assure you, all fire-foxes prefer it that way, as opposed too………. being…….
    not so…….
    as…..
    on fire.

    J. Sappenfield

  40. Cathy Says:

My boyfriend is going to love this shirt, best birthday present to date!

I also got the girlie “Foxy” shirt, we’re going to look so lame together :P

P.S. The implied message of the fox being abused/ mistreated is a lame, I bet you hate lolcats too.

  41. Daniel Carvalho Says:

Great T-Shirt, I really like the design, it’s rather humorous. Love the whole web standards deal / propaganda.

The only thing I don’t get is the word “open”, shouldn’t it just be “use web standards”? I’ve never heard standards being referred to as open, except “open source”.

I can’t believe Gérard Talbot blemished the first comment to this design. The reality is, every developer knows, building websites according to standards and using Firefox to view those projects, generally every time something is broken it’s because you’ve you’ve done something wrong in the markup / css that IE has failed to interpret correctly and just let slide. It’s this type of strict approach to standards that helps one refine their skills. That sounds like a big win to me. And wow, so many other points Talbot made, is just taking it too far.

    Anyways, nice tee. Well done.

    - Daniel

  42. Tai Allen Says:

    I agree with J. Sappenfield

  43. Pete-Rock, CL Smoof Says:

    It’s a mother-friggen T-shirt don’t take it so seriously

  44. ida Says:

i think this shirt is sooooooo cool!

  45. Holly Says:

I like this shirt. I would love to see one with this graphic, maybe a different slogan. Have you considered long-sleeved tshirts. And personally I would love to see this one as a hoodie.

  46. Sabo Says:

Where are the kids sizes for this T-shirt?

  47. Patrick McCarthy Says:

Hello!?!? Not everyone lives in Sunnyvale. Us folks in the more northerly regions wear long sleeves during the winter. Please start adding these to your store and we’ll start buying them!

  48. Saab Says:

    1. Gérard Talbot has a few good points, mozilla store ought to be improved.
    2. Gérard Talbot needs to look at cute Foxy and chill! FOXY IS SOOO CUTE!
