Roadmap

Here is the updated milestone list, along with estimated release dates:

  • 0.1: Upgrade TikiWiki and Stabilize Server (bug list)
    Status: Done, pending a couple of bugs WebDev is working on
    Purpose: Make it possible to prominently link to SUMO without crashing the server. Also, upgrade the server software, TikiWiki, to version 1.10, which will fix a number of other issues with SUMO.
  • 0.2: Make Knowledge Base Contributions Not Suck (bug list)
    ETA: Early December, 2007
    Purpose: Simplify Knowledge Base contribution process. For example, make it clearer the changes made will be reviewed before it goes live.
  • 0.3: Launch Support Forums (bug list)
    ETA: Mid-December, 2007
    Purpose: Provide a way for users to ask support questions not yet covered in the Knowledge Base.
  • 0.4: Launch Live Chat (bug list)
    ETA: End of December, 2007 (can potentially be done in parallel with 0.3)
  • 0.5: Make Knowledge Base l10n Not Suck (bug list)
    ETA: February 25th, 2008
    Purpose: Make it as easy as possible to translate content and keeping track of changes of the en-US copy of an article. It should be a matter of simply clicking “Translate this page”, which would automatically create a copy of the English version of the article, along with the used tags, and then ask for the new language. Right now it is possible to translate an article, but you have to manually create a new, blank article, write the content, and then tell the system that the article is a translated version of the equivalent English article.
  • 0.6: In-product Help Preparations (bug list)
    ETA: July 3, 2008
    Actual release date: July 8, 2008
    Purpose: Do all the necessary preparations to make SUMO ready to be used as in-product help in Firefox 3. This includes more l10n fixes, a new visual theme, l10n coordination, and performance improvements. This milestone follows the Firefox 3 release which is targeted for mid-June.
  • 0.7: Improve Support Forum (bug list)
    ETA: End of September, 2008
    Actual release date: September 30, 2008
    Purpose: Improve the support forum with features that simplify the work of our contributors, as well as make it easier for users to find relevant information.
  • 0.8: Improve Search (bug list)
    ETA: November, 2008 (Google SoC project)
    Purpose: Switch from Google search to something that will allow us to make better use of our tagging/categorization features, plus solving many issues we’re facing today. See separate Search Requirements.
  • 0.9: Support for Screencasts (bug list)
    ETA: December, 2008
    Purpose: Add support for screencasts in Knowledge Base articles. This includes the infrastructure/backend as well as UI for uploading and managing screencasts.
  • 1.0: Usability Polish (bug list)
    ETA: January, 2008
    Purpose: Make the UI of SUMO easier to use, including the editing and l10n workflow. This will be a teamwork with TikiWiki and Alain Désilets of the National Research Council of Canada.
