Two months ago Mozilla launched a campaign called Webify Me. The campaign was rooted in the idea that although there is one Web that we use, we all have different interactions with it, which makes the Web both unique and personal for each individual.

Webify Me is a site that builds a fun, visual manifestation of the user’s personal Web. Users answered a series of fun questions on how they use the Web. Then they were presented with their personalized visualization of their web. It was represented in a collage using 250 original photographs, from a locket symbolizing online identity, to a mix tape symbolizing musical appreciation, to a spork symbolizing multitasking. Users could then share the visualization of their web to their friends and family via Twitter, Facebook, or adding it into the Webify Me gallery.

A few Mozilla friends participated and shared what their Web looks like to us and to our Firefox users. Check out what their web looks like:

Sarah Vergo, Professional connector, Founder at Maven

Kelly Ryan O’Brien, VIP, connector extraordianaire, founder of Chicago Bloggers. Read more…

Acacia Voss, director gilt groupe

After two months since the campaign launched, we have reached over 1 million collages added into our gallery! It’s super exciting to see all these users who participated and discovered what their unique web looks like.

Here are some other stats about the campaign:

Goal: 100,000 collages created in 30 days

Traffic came from….

Mozilla launched a 3D collaborative art project called Mark Up in early June. Inspired by the beliefs in the Mozilla Manifesto and the work of Evan Roth, Mark Up was created to be an open Web application that allowed users to make “marks” in support of the values of the open Web.

Using an open-source technology called Graffiti Mark Up Language (GML), <canvas> and JavaScript, Mark Up captured movement on the X, Y and Z axes to record details about individual marks creating rich and detailed visuals that can be browsed in 3D. You can read more about the project on Laura Mesa’s blog post.

Since launch, the Mark Up project has collected over 1.4 million marks from all over the world and easily achieved our goal of 1 million. Participation has ranged from submitting initials and writing statements of support to full works of art, and here are a few of our favorites:

Other Stats:

Site available in 14 languages at launch

At our peak, 25K signatures were left per hour

Average of 112K page views per day

90% of participants came from outside of the United States, with the most coming from Germany and Brazil.

Now that the campaign has drawn to a close, and in accordance with the vision of the project, we want to make the code and data collected on the site available under the Creative Commons share-alike license to help others with similar or future projects. Mozilla used the technology to collect marks for the open Web, but you could imagine other causes or artists using Mark Up code to inspire their own collaborations, including art projects and social statements.

All of the marks submitted have been sanitized and all personal data removed. You can download the anonymous and aggregated GML files from here for use in further analysis or similar projects. You can also access to the code on GitHub.

Thanks again to all those involved in this project and we hope that GML and the Mark Up site will inspire future artistic collaborations on the Web.

We launched the first version of glow.mozilla.org with the Firefox 4 release in March 2011 as a way to visualize Firefox downloads and community involvement around the world. Thanks to the development skill of Matthew Claypotch and Jeff Balogh, and the design talents of Sean Martell, it was a great success, with more than 1.2 million unique visitors and frequent press mentions. (It was also a pretty nifty demo of some of the best open technology the modern web has to offer.)

The first version of Glow used several technologies including SQLStream and HBase to process download request logs in real time and make them available for the site to display. If you are interested in learning the technical details behind Glow read this article from the Mozilla Metrics team, which has links to the code repositories:
http://blog.mozilla.com/data/2011/03/22/how-glow-mozilla-org-gets-its-data/

As we move toward a new rapid release cycle, we are finding new ways of measuring Firefox success across the globe. So, we’ve temporarily pulled Glow offline while we cook up the next awesome iteration. Thanks for your support, and stay tuned for more Glow in the near future!
